McDUFFIE IS THE NEW PRINCE OF THE CITY!

Kenyan McDuffie is the new Ward 5 Representative on the D.C. Council.  McDuffie defeated 10 other contestants running for the ward seat vacated by Harry Thomas, Jr. who was convicted of a felon.  McDuffie won 45% of the vote in the Ward which is one of the largest voting areas in Northeast Washington. The ward houses a strong middle class base, Catholic University and many businesses.

McDuffie’s election will bring a new chapter to a part of D.C. where residents take pride in their neighborhoods, schools and businesses. Ward 5 has been without a
representative since January when Thomas stepped down. The new councilman will have a good pathway before him because he can hit the ground running with a strong clean slate. Many voters expressed their hopes that Ward 5 residents
will rally behind the new representative and make it a positive showcase
for the District of Columbia.

McDuffie worked in Mayor Vincent Gray’s administration and left his position in the mayor’s office to run for the council seat.  McDuffie is a lawyer, graduating
from Howard University and the Maryland University School of Law.  And, for four
years he worked hard as a mailman serving his hometown neighborhoods.   Kenyan
McDuffie is a family man with his wife and two children.

D.C. PARKING SUMMIT

D.C. Councilwoman Mary Cheh is planning a summit on D.C. parking this summer. Due to the overcrowding and future predictions of more people driving in the District… the councilwoman feels that it’s important to conduct this summit. I agree some attention should be paid to this issue. In fact, it’s always a great idea even to get feedback from the public. Especially those who drive and have to park in neighborhoods downtown where there are meters. Parking in D.C. is not a dream for good wishes.

The councilmember is suggesting that a parking-meter-system used in parts of
Columbia Heights and on Capitol Hill should be considered. The program gives
flexibility to the D.C. Department of Transportation to increase the meter rates
to force the rapid turnover of vehicles in metered parking spaces. Even in Mayor
Vincent Gray’s budget proposals for 2013, it’s recommended that the Department of Transportation should initiate a “performance parking” program in certain neighborhoods… modeled after what’s already working in our city.

Let’s face it!!!  D.C. Government is no friend to drivers or parking customers in the
city.   1) The parking rates are already too high and the spaces are not
fairly designated in many areas downtown. For instance, in the 3700 block of
Connecticut Avenue, NW, in front of the Chinese restaurants, there is an
“Entrance” no-parking sign which takes up about two or three parking spaces. I
find this in many areas downtown…especially in some of the city’s favorite hot
spots. It must be a revenue thing. On 14th street, above Park Road, N.W., the city has given Metro the whole block from the Tivoli Theater site north to Ruby Tuesday's.  Metro takes up enough space to park five Metro buses in those spaces, which seems very unfair to the businesses along that 14th Street corridor because of the lack of parking for the public.

Parking in the District of Columbia is bad all around. Why doesn’t the city build
parking space garages with reasonable rates like the parking buildings in Silver Spring, Maryland? Believe me, parking in D.C. for 10 minutes can be
highway robbery!

GOING TO THE GO, GO

Little more than three decades ago, the sounds of Go, Go were the thing in D.C. Even to this day, Go, Go is still cherished as D.C.’s own contribution to the American music scene… in many ways a Washington, D.C. Hall of Fame.   Go, Go became a national attraction, but to local folks…Go, Go meant to dance, meet friends and hang out with some good recreational and entertaining fun. I remember Go, Go dancing and rhythms at the Foxtrap. During the 70's and 80's it was a part of “fashionable” Washington.

CHUCK BROWN is the Go, Go King!  In a television interview, Chuck Brown talks about his musical craft as a culture that young people embraced. So true because young and old were fans of this original D.C. sound…. And while his music continues to entertain in the ears and hearts of many… his spirit will always be remembered.  At 75 years old, he gave us much to remember.

WARD 5 CANDIDATES AND WHO’S WHO?

This week, the Ward Five election for a seat on the D.C. Council… to replace former councilman Harry Thomas, Jr. who was found guilty of stealing more than $ 350,000 of city funds … opened to absentee voters and for the special election which is scheduled for May 14th. A Ward resident told me last weekend, that some 11 people are seeking the seat for Ward Five. I’ve heard from several folks in the Ward who are feeling very distant from the campaigns because most of the candidates are unknowns. There have been candidate forums and meetings throughout the Ward, but still at this late date… which of these “grandstand” seekers really stan- out as a viable, and reliable, candidate to serve the people of Ward Five.

This special election is most difficult to process or predict. One forum will be spread over the course of four days…allowing two candidates a night for one- two hours to talk with the voting-community. Outside of seeing a few signs around the Ward, no one has enough dough to buy advertising time on radio or TV, so that’s an avenue that’s not happening. So how can you know who is best for the Ward and it’s 75,000 citizens or voters?   What is the track record of most of these candidates and what contributions have they made in advocating or serving the Ward?

Believe me, after covering D.C. elections in the wards and for the entire city over the past 40 years… it looks like the voters of Ward Five’s special election will need a miracle worker and some 75, 000 Guardian Angles to help vote-in the right representative for Ward Five and its people. Vincent Orange, I thought you were going to be the saving grace?  I guess being At-large must be your pathway to the glory of someday reaching the title of mayor. Good luck Ward Five!

ALL HANDS AND EYES ON BOARD

On the evening news every night, we hear and see the dangers of driving on the American highways and local roads today.  The National Transportation Safety Board released a report recently calling attention to the fact that large numbers of distracted drivers use cellphones, tweet, eat,put on mak- up and you name it in work zones throughout the area. Work zones are where construction is going on or where housing or business developments are being built. Such work areas are very busy with cross traffic, big loading trucks and flagmen ushering the traffic back and forth through the designated work zones. Drivers must pay absolute attention or an accident which can occur in seconds, will tie up the traffic for miles.

Setting the example or role model doesn’t always work to encourage better driving habits.  Just recently in Olney, Maryland, a teenage driver pleaded guilty to three counts of vehicular manslaughter and one count of leaving the scene of the crash that he caused. In court the young teenage driver was sentenced to 20 years for his actions which caused the deaths of three people. Plus, his blood alcohol count was twice the legal limit. This past month, the sentence of the young driver was reduced to 8 years in prison and 5 years on probation by a three member judge-panel. Did he get off? Think about it… the parents of the victims killed in the car feel a great injustice was done.

Accidents due to alcohol, distractions and other devices doesn’t seem to be getting better...nor safety increasing on our roads and streets. Count the number of times you have heard about some driver losing control and smashing into a storefront or house. How sad the case in New York City where a family of seven was killed instantly after their vehicular went air bourn over a wall and dropped 60 feet into the Bronx Zoo. According to the New York Police, the cause of the tragedy was speed.

Slowing down, my fellow drivers, won’t hurt, instead it might save a life…just maybe your own!

A GREAT DJ... AN EVEN BETTER, OPEN-MINDED BROADCASTER

Dick Clark has died leaving a lasting legacy in both the television and music industries! He was an American Broadcast Icon to everybody, the "Eternal Teenager".  I remember coming home from school and putting my books on the couch, robbing the refrigerator of a snack and drink … turning the TV on to Channel 7 and watching American Bandstand. Boy, if only I could have joined in the fun in Philadelphia U.S.A. to dance away on the show live. Outside of the CBS Ed Sullivan Show, I could see my black entertainers perform the popular songs on national TV. Those were the days.

Dick Clark was my idol because he was a radio man who played the music of my generation. I wanted to be in radio and TV all of my life and so I thought of Dick Clark as a model to what my desires lead me to hope to be someday. Besides the Howard Theater in my D.C. city, I got a real thrill out of watching the Motown artists and big name black stars like Ray Charles, Aretha, the Temps and Ruth Brown on the screen all because of a great and fair broadcaster, Dick Clark.

In my town, we teenagers were introduced to television, the Information Highway of the day, with three dance shows. While American Bandstand with Dick Clark was big time, from a big-time city  (Philly)… we had our own dance show spinoffs from America Bandstand…. We had “Teenerama” on Channel 14 where the black kids went after school to dance. And on Channel 20, there was the Milt Grant Dance Show for the white kids… on Tuesday they opened the doors to black kids. Regardless, we were dancing and I was happy to have my first media job on “Teenerama” – Thanks to the spinoffs of Dick Clark.

EXTENDED SCHOOL HOURS IN D.C.

Why Not!!!  Mayor Vincent Gray and D.C. School Chancellor Kaya Henderson are proposing thatschools operate beyond the regular current hours of nine-to-three in order to solve the problems of improving the national test scores among the student body. Mayor Gray has sighted the D.C. Charter Schools as an example of how students will have a better opportunity to learn, study and be able to compete nationally. Charter schools operate on a longer learning and study time system than public schools.

What’s really great about the idea is the relief that will come to parents who’s big worries are what to do with my child after the 3:00 o’clock school closing…what next? The Washington Teacher’s Union seems to be on board… of course an adjustment or reform must be considered by administrators for teacher’s compensation.

Today… taxpayers spend a great deal on after-school-programs in recreation and school playgrounds…with such a proposal of extending the school hours…maybe monies can be better redirected. Today, occupying the young mind can be challenging and studies show that educational math, science and history learning is best when students are challenged more. Good Idea, Mr. Mayor and Ms. School Chancellor!

ON HIS WATCH

Secret Service front teams in Cartagena, Columbia, several G.S.A. staffers (Government Services Administration) and a bunch of service men have made the news headlines this month because of the scandals of prostitution, government waste, partying on taxpayers and the slaps of indecency under the banners of federal government. I’m not surprised if these incidences just happened, to embarrass and to bring disgrace to the watch of President Barack Obama.

In addition to the “noise” on radio talk shows, TV and internet jargon, now we find that federal employees are throwing mud in the face of this administration because of their scandalous behavior. Already, one republican congressman has accused President Obama with “bad management” because of these distractions of negativity. The president, like any CEO, military general, and bishop or school head can’t control every agenda and worker under their direction. People today will do crazy things behind your back, around the corner and under the table. Plus, some people today take their work for granted, regardless. This seems to be the story here and it’s a shame that we have lost that sense of loyalty and respect in our public service responsibilities and public trust.

President Obama is not the blame, my republican congressional friend…it’s the mood of disrespect and indignity that seems to float like an albatross over the shoulders of a very good president – who happens to be black!

EXTENDING THE BAR HOURS

Mayor Vincent Gray’s proposal to extend the hours of bars in the District of Columbia is not very popular in the neighborhoods. The proposal is a part of the mayor’s budget solutions to bring more money into the city’s tills. The plan calls for an extension of bar hours by one hour. The new hours would allow bars to remain open until 3:00 am on weekdays and until 4:00 am on weekends. The plan also calls for bars to open at 7:00 am instead of the 9 o’clock hour each day and will be liberal in permitting bars to stay open longer during presidential inaugurations. The projected booze-initiative would bring the city some $ 5.3 million in tax revenue.

In my Columbia Heights neighborhood, the mayor’s proposal is not welcomed. While the city administration is concerned about generating more dollars for the tax base…the idea is not fair and will cause a greater problem to residences, property owners and taxpayers. I fully agree with Councilman Jim Graham of Ward One, who opposes the mayor’s proposal citing that “noise and carousing already shatters any serenity in the wee hours.” Graham should know of the problems that bars and night spots cause in our communities because his office, the Alcohol Beverage Regulation Administration (ABRA) and the mayor’s office have received any number of complaints from taxpayers about nightlife activities that cause many problems.

The biggest complaints in my neighborhood include the parking spaces on the block occupied by drivers from Maryland and Virginia…taken from home owners, the trash left on the streets in front of my house by night-life “bar-hoppers”, the cursing and loud music that penetrates my moments of privacy and the disrespect that these bar patrons show towards our neighborhoods and properties. In addition to these complaints you have an element of criminal activity including drugs on the streets.

Mr. Mayor… your proposal is not serving the law abiding citizens in our neighborhoods. Maybe your proposal is best for bars downtown tourist/commerce zones only, and not in my neighborhood!!!

TOO CLOSE TO CALL...AND D.C. DIVIDED

The recent April primary election in the District has given us some interesting results about how much D.C. is politically changing. After all the complaining and gripping about the city’s leadership and corruption on the D.C. Council, voters returned to office three ward representatives who won their seats back. In Wards 4, 7 and 8 the candidate-incumbents won outright. But, the big question is what happened to at-large candidate Vincent Orange, who was in the race to win and has been very popular among D.C. politics. A former councilmember and won an interim seat on the council.

At this hour, the result of the at-large race that Orange is a part of is too close to call. His opposition was a man named Sekou Biddle.  Biddle, a longtime political activist in the city went the Woodrow Wilson High School, graduated from Morehouse College and taught elementary school as a part of the Teach America program. At this point some 543 votes were cast. Orange could win by a very small margin it’s projected.

This at-large race has opened some interesting doors about the city’s political divisions. Biddle was supported heavily by white voters while the majority of black voters supported Vincent Orange. One could say that this at-large race is a repeated mirror of the recent mayoral election between Vincent Gray and Adrian Fenty. The city was divided between white and black voters.  Education was a priority issue in that mayoral race a year ago and much of the attention was centered on then school chancellor Michelle Rhee.   Rhee is a strong associate with Teach America. Biddle was associated with the same organization. So, could one easily think that the path of Sekou Biddle is the“great-hope” for white voters in the city? Voters who were strong advocates of Rhee and her policies aligned with Teach America and former mayor Adrian Fenty. Vincent Orange is closely aligned and supported by the AFL-CIO, D.C. Chamber and black churches. I see these new divided political fronts in D.C. politics as the changing face of Washington.

Update:  Vincent Orange has been declared the winner of the D.C. Council seat election over Sekou Biddle by more than 1,700 votes or 3%, thus omitting the need for an automatic recount.

BITS & PIECES

Congratulations to the 200 centenarians in the city of Washington, D.C.

This week, I had the opportunity to host a luncheon for the city’s centenarians at the Plaza Hotel at Thomas Circle in Northwest Washington, D.C. The enjoyable and well-planned luncheon was sponsored by the D.C. Office of Aging and the Family Matters agency. Entertainment included the Joseph Witherspoon group and the Potomac River Rascals.  Mayor Vincent Gray addressed the 41 centenarians attending the luncheon by reminding them of the many presidents they have witnessed by living a hundred years or more.

The oldest in the room was 106 years old. Currently, the oldest in the city is 112 years of age. To compute the time capsule of age and years…the 41 centenarians at the luncheon would equal a total of 4,328 years that would stretch back to 2316 B.C., before Christ.    Many of the attendees said that their years of life have been a gift from God. It is truly a gift to enjoy such longevity and a point of family pride for many. In closing, may I say, hats off to the 200 centenarians in the city.  May God bless each of you with  peace and joy for the rest of your life on earth!

POINTING FINGERS OF HATE

The father of George Zimmerman, the shooter of the teenager in Sanford, Florida spoke out this week in defense of his son’s claim of self-defense. Robert Zimmerman accused President Obama of hate towards the shooter’s case. He also, pointed fingers at the N.A.A.C.P. and other African American groups. “I never foresaw so much hate coming from Obama, the Congressional Black Caucus and the N.A.A.C.P.” says the 64 year old father.

Mr. Robert Zimmerman…checkout your statements in defending your son, when you call people of color showing hate. You really put your foot in your own mouth!  If anything, it sounds racist and hateful on your part.  Just what people at the rallies and forums having been saying all the time…“the shooting was a racial act” and now dear old “dad” has sealed the message of hate and race by invoking his 2-cents.

EASTER IN THE NEIGHBORHOODS

For Christians, the special religious period of re-birth and resurrection is upon us.  It’s Eastertide 2012. I wonder how much we think about the message of Easter as we go about our daily lives in the neighborhoods. “Love thy neighbor, as you love yourself", a commandment from God that we sometimes forget to practice. Do we really care about each other, the man or lady next door?  Do we take time to find out if a person or family is having financial problems and just might need a loaf of bread?  Do we really lend a hand to help others in need? Yes we give to charities, to church and to the United Way Campaign.  But, do we really care, anymore?

There are many problems and troubles in our neighborhoods, our families and our day-to-day relationships with others.  The one key aspect of our lives that has spurred us to grow farther apart from one another  is the “high-tech” world we live in.  So many people today would rather email you, than to speak with you via telephone or face-to-face.  When we go out to dinner, we convey that would should not be disturbed when checking  iPod or cell phone texts. Are we becoming more de-humanized because of the technology distractions we  depend on so heavily?  In the average home, there are televisions in several places, if not every room.   And family members retreat to their individual spaces of isolation for rest and relaxation.

Living Easter in our neighborhoods is questionable.   If a crime is being committed, it’s a natural thing to say…"I don’t want to get involved”. Easter is a time to reflect and to renew our behavior and goodwill.  It’s a perfect time to look at oneself and try to be more outgoing and generous of time in our day-to-day relationships.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

This week, an angry man who has been known for his aggressive attitudes and scary behavior allegedly killed his former wife by shooting her in the head and dumping her on the street from a van they were riding in.   The woman, according to court documents and news reports, lived in fear for her life.  She had a court protective order and yet the man caught up with her and killed her in  public and tossed her body to the streets. Unfortunately, this is NOT uncommon.   Over and over again, we hear similar stories in every one of our communities.

Domestic violence is a serious problem in the American family, and destroys the fabric of the entire family's life, especially the vulnerable children.   According to recent reports, even more shelters for battered women are needed. According to The Telegraph News Service, domestic violence among middle class and professional women is on the increase. The news service reports that experts warn because of economic strain domestic violence is growing across the U.S.    E.V.E. – Ending Violence Everywhere states that domestic violence can be physical, sexual and mental forms of abuse.

The National Domestic Violence Hotline, The National Center for Victims of Crime and the WomensLaw.org all agree that one in every four women are attacked by domestic violence. One of the most frightening scenarios is the violence among young adults and teenage couples…where sexual violence occurs -- forced sex on a person without consent.  Such actions are considered rape, but millions of women will not report such violent acts against a lover, spouse or boyfriend.   Living in fear and abuse means that one is NOT living happily with love.

My friends and family at the Red Derby Bar/Grill on 14th Street in Washington, D.C. are conducting a “Help The Children Easter Basket” campaign to assist children who are the victims of domestic violence at D.A.S.H. an organization that shelters women with children who are homeless.  Below is a statement from my friends working to combat the pain and anguish that families are facing from domestic violence this Easter and spring.

The Red Derby, at 14th and Spring Road in NW, is collecting donated toys and candy to build Easter baskets to present to the children of DASH, District Alliance for Safe Housing (http://www.dashdc.org/). DASH is a local organization offering shelter and services for survivors of domestic violence and their families. The Red Derby wants to put together spring baskets for all 73 children currently being sheltered by DASH (47 little boys and 26 little girls). The children range in age from babies to teenagers, so donations might include items from stuffed animals to baseballs - and, of course, delicious candy treats! Most children are in the 4- to 8-year-old range, and Easter treats and games that are appropriate for that group are very much appreciated. The Red Derby is incredibly grateful to those who have already donated candy, baskets, toys, and goodies for the kids, and they will continue to collect through the 25th. On that Sunday, from 7-9, neighbors and patrons will gather to put together the baskets - those friends who are artistically gifted are especially welcome to help create the gifts. The Red Derby really wants to be able to present amazing baskets to these kids both to celebrate spring and to give a little warmth to those in need of sunshine.

Please help! Give a basket and give to help a child victimized
by domestic violence!

JOHN THOMPSON RESPECTED…

During my years working at Clear Channel Radio, I had the chance to know and to work with John Thompson.  Among the many honors bestowed on him for his career with Georgetown University and his thirteen years in sports broadcasting, I learned very early to respect him. I remember his first days on the air at W.T.E.M. 980.  My job was director of public affairs for Clear Channel…little did I know about sports, but John Thompson would always invite me on his show when the sports topics related to a news story or a community issue.

I remember the “Snake-Head” story in the news around 2003. This was a story about a foreign fish in our local waters causing havoc to Chesapeake Bay fisherman and local ponds. John asked me to appear on his show…my office was right down the hall…to explain the nature of this fish and how it might impact local water fishing sports.  And each time I was asked to appear on the John Thompson Show, I felt a certain pride and honor. I can understand well… just how Thompson became the great coach he was at Georgetown and the strong vibrating voice of sports radio.  Thompson, with that “tanker” voice always made you feel like a student or player when talking with him…he will always be Mr. Coach!

I’m sorry to hear that John Thompson is leaving the Washington airwaves, he will be sorely missed. But, I can fairly and justly say…John Thompson is a legend and a pillar of great sportsmanship. Truly a big brother who will always get my respect!!!

THE PRIEST WAS WRONG!

Why many people, especially the young leave the church…

A Gaithersburg woman was being buried from St. John Neumann Catholic Church where the priest celebrating the funeral Mass denied serving Holy Communion to the woman’s lesbian daughter. The daughter went to receive the sacrament and the priest told the Mount Rainier artist that she couldn’t receive Communion “because she was living with a woman in the state of sin”, according to the Washington Post. To further the priest’s insults upon the woman and the grieving family, the priest walked away from the altar during the reading of the eulogy…which was read by the woman.

To the family, the scene at the funeral Mass was insulting and insensitive by the priest, the Rev. Marcel Guarnizo. When the woman was turned away from the catholic church’s most Blessed Sacrament, Holy Communion… the woman was stunned and walked away from the altar. After the Mass, the priest even refused to officiate at the burial site, and did not find a replacement.

The Washington Catholic Archdiocese gave a very brief statement about the incident, saying that the priest acted against the policies of the church. An Archdiocese statement further said that an investigation will occur. The family meanwhile wants an apology. The family said that they did not want to “bash” the church, according to the Post article.

Sorry Father Marcel, you should be removed from parish life, as a pastor until you learn more about how not to discriminate and publically accuse a person of sin. That’s why we have confessionals or private conferencing. You are not God and to judge a person openly was unjust. As a Communion minister in the church…you learn through the Eucharistic classes to become a server not to deny a person Communion based on what you may think, how they may look or what you might have heard about that person. Every catholic has a right to receive the Sacraments of the Church without public ridicule. “Let ye be the first to cast a stone” John 8:7

A TIME TO REFLECT

This week of February 22 was the beginning of forty days of sacrifice for billions of Christians around the world.  This past Wednesday was Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent.  To the millions of faithful Christians, Lent is a special time to forego some favorite thing or behavior. Many pray and do good acts for others and hundreds will meditate about God, life and repentance.  Lent leads to the celebration of Easter… a rebirth, a renewal, a new beginning, a freshening of spirit because of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Christian or not, in this world of conflict, uncertainty and hatred… I welcome this religious period to my daily life…so that I can stop and reflect about the many positives of my life. Lent is also a time to reflect on the goals that I have accomplished in life with the help of others. And Lent is also a special time for appreciation and to seek newer avenues in my daily tasks. In the end, what I hope most for is to care for others and give of myself.

Lent and the politics of America’s 2012 certainly have made me think more about how respect plays an even greater role in achieving peace and equality in our society.  Today, politics have become so divisive, abusive and so insultingly personal. The Republicans, the Democrats, and Independents alike have all put aside both values and moral respect. Do we really care for the little people…the poor, the voiceless, the elderly and the disabled?  And so I wonder during this season of Lenten… are we all equal under the banners of today’s American capitalism and politics?  Are we really willing to make a sacrifice for good over greed, hate, personal isolation and not caring?

AMERICAN WOMEN ON THE MOVE

Within a matter of two months, American women have taken a stand and they are changing the way many men think and act towards the issues that concern them. On three separate occasions, women have spoken out loudly and have gotten results. First…Women twitted, emailed and sounded out against the conservative elite at the Susan G. Komen Foundation’s withholdings of funding the Planned Parenthood heath care for women. The women won! Second… Women spoke out in favor of President Obama’s health care objectives to have employers provide contraception care for women… The women’s outcry against the all-white-republican male panels on Capitol Hill and the church bishops (all male) was heard across the nation calling the congressional panel of male religious leaders and legislators a sham... The women were heard.  Finally…Women protested, marched and carried their disagreements to Virginia’s Governor Robert McDonald’s desk… the governor changed his mind and will not sign off on the proposed abortion “Ultrasound” Bill that Virginia’s all white male general assembly (republicans) passed…the women won!

TRUMP’S HOTEL

Recent news reports state that gambling establishment guru Donald Trump is planning to open a new luxury hotel in the Old Post Office Building.  Trump's luxury-five-star hotel will be located at 12th and Pennsylvania Avenue, Northwest, in the heart of D.C.’s tourist markets. The hotel will be built on what many have called the Avenue of the Presidents. Pennsylvania Avenue is America’s main street and the core of America’s pride and patriotic life…between the White House and the Capitol of the United States.  As a Washingtonian, who marched on this prestigious pathway in school parades and national holidays, we have always looked at the Avenue with American pride. Throughout history before World War 1, Pennsylvania Avenue was the showcase of presidential inaugurations and parades of American service men and women in victory marches.

If Trump opens a hotel in Washington, D.C. on Pennsylvania Avenue in the landmark Old Post Office, I hope he remembers to not exclude contractors and workers from the District of Columbia!  Too often these big developments in the city fail to employ workers and skillful persons from within the city limits. The hospitality industry in Washington, D.C. is big.  Second to federal and local government employment, many residents, family breadwinners and youth are available to work in the type of hotel development that Trump is planning. In fact, hiring locals from our neighborhoods might be the only way that poor D.C. residents can afford to enter such proposed luxurious hotel living.  D.C. Taxpayers deserve to be included…

Trump's new International Hotel of Washington will cost $200 million for renovations at the Old Post Office. Money talks and it’s nice to have friends in high congressional places. Take note...Trump is a republican.

PARALLEL PARKING

According to NBC Washington.com, the District Department of Motor Vehicles does not provide test driving for parallel parking.  Shameful! Over the past decades,  a student in the D.C. Public School taking driver’s education had to learn how to parallel park. It was the frustrating, fearful task that every young adult experienced when trying to pass the driver’s test to obtain a driver’s license.

These D.C. newcomers in administrative government positions know little about the history of D.C. driving and what was mandated for obtaining a license.  In this city parallel parking is essential.   To Washingtonians…It’s a D.C. THING!  The excuse given for not requiring parallel parking as part of the test is the D.M.V. can’t find space for testing potential drivers.   Silly! Now I know why I enjoy watching those crazy drivers trying to park on D.C. streets. Believe me, it’s a show.  Maybe the officials at D.M.V. don’t know how to parallel park.   Please FIND THE SPACE!!!

D.C. GOVERNMENT HAS A NEW TOWN HALL …
D.C. JAIL

If D.C. Government employees continue to be investigated jailed or accused…we will need to replace the entire Government of the District of Columbia.  After the verdict of former councilman Harry Thomas, Jr., along with the D.C. Teachers leader who went to jail for stealing money, the lady in finance who embezzled thousands of dollars, the number of police officers who were caught dealing in funny business, the Department of Housing staffers caught over strange contractual workings, a D.C. Council chief of staff who was wheeling-and-dealing with the taxi people, a mayor who is under investigation and other D.C. councilmembers in question for their ethical dealings… we may need to hold government business at the new town hall… the city jail!

According to NBC4, 130 D.C. Government employees have been accused of wrong doing this past week. The employees in question are still on the payrolls and some are former employees.  After a year-long probe they are suspected of abusing unemployment insurance benefits. Investigators found that a 130 government workers drew on unemployment benefits while actually receiving a government check at the same time.

According to the Washington Post, nearly 90 employees were suspended this past Monday.  They will face potential firing and prosecution for receiving unemployment benefits while holding city jobs. According to the Post, another 40 former city workers cashed unemployment checks they were not entitled to which they too will face sanctions against them.  Since 2009, the city government has paid out some $840,000 benefits to working city employees.  AND…one of the suspected workers is a staffer in D.C. Councilman Kwame Brown’s office.  Boy!  This stuff just doesn’t stop!!!  The names of those suspected of fraud have not been released, but the mayor’s office has announced that the names of the accused have been turned over to the U.S. Attorney’s office for possible prosecution. The employees involved come from various parts of the D.C. Government, such as the Department of Transportation, D.C. Employment Services and the Council.
The jails are going to be really full.  More of our tax money wasted.

CATHOLICS, THE PRESIDENT AND BIRTH CONTROL

I am Roman Catholic.  Thus, I have no problem commenting on this topic. Except, I’m not a woman…so to comment I can only rely on my female friends and the recent reports issued. So, it seems to me there should be a compromise, respect and better understanding between the White House and the churches of America about birth-control. Yes, I believe deeply in the separation of church and state.

At some time over 98% of women have or will use birth control, according to USA Today. This is another staggering statistic for conservatives to pitch their sick agenda about what’s right for you, me and the rest of the world.  The out-of-touch U.S. Catholic Bishops along with the Evangelicals and Southern Bible Belters are all up in arms over the decision by the White House to make sure women and female employees are covered for their personal needs under any health care provision of an employer receiving federal funds.

I understand the churches position, too. That’s why I think there must be some type of compromise by the White House not to infringe on the rights of religious institutions or their beliefs. Still in a recent poll by the Public Religion Research Institute, a majority (55%) of Americans agree that "employers should be required to provide their employees with healthcare plans that cover contraception and birth control at no cost”. The report showed that 40% disagree with such a requirement.

Funny, how the report only addressed the results of white Americans both catholic and protestant.  Regardless, more catholic women used some type of birth control…maybe some 60% or more. I like my president and I like my church…so, Mr. Obama there must be room for compromise.

GET YOUR CHILD UP AND OUT TO SCHOOL ON TIME

Parents in Loudoun County, Virginia are up-in-arms because the school administrators are using their truancy law to charge them for their tardy kids in school.  According to Virginia Post news, Amy and Mark Denicore are headed to a full-blown trial to defend themselves against charges they violated Virginia law by making their kids late to elementary school too often.  Several other parents have been charged because of their children’s tardiness at school. Most of the cases are children who are late a significant amount of times and will be charged accordingly. The parents are charged with three counts of Class 3 misdemeanors, each carrying a fine of $ 500. Since September, the Denicores’ kids, ages 6, 7 and 9 have been late for school some 30 (thirty) times.

Parents… we need this law in many places around the metropolitan area. After all, this would be a perfect time, if your child has a "late problem", to teach your child how to respect the fact that “being on time” is important and polite. Furthermore, it’s a good way at their early ages to show them  being on time for school is like being on time for work when they grow up... or be fired!  This is not a pretty picture when parents can’t encourage their children to get to school on time and to be late over 30 times.

It’s good that the parents are being held responsible and accountable for their children’s actions… Right on to the school officials and right on to Judge Pamela L. Brooks!

ROMNEY AND THE POOR

Mitt Romney, republican candidate for president of the United States said last week, “I’m not concerned about the poor because they have a safety net”.   Am I surprised about his insensitive statement?   No.  Mitt Romney is a typical American white, filth- rich man who is disconnected from poor people, or people who are not of his elite rich world.  Isn’t that what the “Occupy Wall Street” 99% of Americans are protesting about?

Unless you have been there, it’s hard to imagine or  even to understand the struggles of those who are less fortunate in our communities.  How do we define “poor”? According to the statements by other republicans running for president… we are talking about welfare recipients, people who don’t want to work or as Mr. Santorum put it in Iowa “It’s white people’s dollars that are paying for blacks on welfare”.

Poor people in American are a cross-section of all ethnicities, and in fact the majority are not black (African-Americans make up just 13% of our total U.S. population)! Most poor people in our neighborhoods across America are those trying to “make ends meet”.  Not necessarily those on any form of welfare. And believe me there is a BIG Gap between the rich and poor. Anyone living on a regular salary or restricted income to pay the mortgage, pay the bills and put food on the table to support the family is poor.  These include the hard working people living from paycheck-to-paycheck, month-to-month each year. The poor are the elderly living on a small, fixed income and hoping to get a little money on the side to help out.

Mr. Romney… it would be hard for you, who make over a $100,000 just doing a speech, to fundamentally understand my poor neighbors down the street who don’t have any safety net and they aren NOT on welfare.

SUSAN G. KOMEN AND THE REPUBLICANS…

Yes, it is political that the Susan G. Komen for the Cure stripped  Plan Parenthood of America of its breast cancer screening funding on some silly false reasoning. Let’s face it the head of Susan G. is a republican who vowed to end abortions at Plan Parenthood.  Yes, it’s about abortion and federal funding … and it’s about making Plan Parenthood pay for their stance in helping poor and unfortunate women in our communities. Barbara Walters of ABC-TV’s “The View” plainly stated that “Planned Parenthood of America does not perform abortions… they educate women about abortions…but that’s all”.

Political…you bet! A republican congressional committee is investigating Planned Parenthood to find out if any taxpaying funds go to assist abortions by the agency. But the reality and truth is that Planned Parenthood renders special services for women, such as breast exams, family planning and other health related services for the most underserved of our communities.

An outcry and a serious backlash has occurred in the 24-hours since the decision not to fund Planned Parenthood. Thousands of emails, letters and response have gone on record and are critical of the actions taken. Many voices from everyday American women have been recognized to say that they will not do the Susan G. Komen walk again.  Such reactions will be a big blow to Susan G.

Since this news broke, Planned Parenthood has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations including a generous gift from Mayor Bloomberg of $250,000, plus $1 to match other gifts up to $250,000.   Maybe this time the  so called conservative politics can step aside and let real people serve our nation’s communities and women…Go Planned Parenthood!

BREAKING NEWS:   The Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation apologized for cutting off funding from Planned Parenthood and vowed to revise its policy.  The people shouted and they HAD to listen.

TV COOKING SHOWS AND MY HEALTH…

I may not be the most skillful or creative chef in the kitchen, but I do a pretty job.   The problem I have watching the TV cooking shows is that if I follow their advice…I would be dead!  On almost every show or segment  I see...salt and sugar are used excessively! Whether they are cooking chicken, veggies or just plain old soup, salt appears to be the main seasoning to accent or to enhance the flavor.  They even use salt on seafood…which comes from the “salty” sea.

I’m sorry Ms. and Mr. TV Cooking Experts… herbs are healthier and believe it or not salt is not a part of my receipe for healthy food prepartion.  My advice, leave the salt on the shelf and live longer!

KIDNEY FAILURE: WHAT WE DON’T KNOW…

Today, there is a very serious concern about the increasing Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and its impact on today’s communities. Chronic kidney disease is most risky among African Americans, Latinos and Native Americans. The total number of cases among these ethnic groups is increasing at alarming rates.  Other populations at risk include older Americans, young adults and teenagers. According to the National Kidney Foundation, there are 20 million Americans with Chronic Kidney Disease. The number of people who have kidney disease is increasing because of poor diet and the lack of proper exercise. A large number of cases stem from family history, also.

Chronic Kidney disease damages the kidney functions and their ability to keep one healthy which can lead to death. If the disease increases in the body… wastes will build up to high levels of toxins which can get into the blood and cause severe sickness. Such conditions caused by CKD will increase high blood pressure, anemia, weak bones and nerve damage. Many of the health conditions can occur over a long period of time. Early detection and treatments are vital to prevent high levels of kidney disease and other health problems affected by a decreased kidney function. Kidney disease can progress and lead to kidney failure which requires dialysis or a kidney transplant.

There are three major causes of kidney disease. The three causes are high blood pressure, diabetes and hereditary. Our focus centers around three major concerns in preventing kidney disease. The concerns include better education and information to the public, a change in one’s diet and eating habits and getting the proper amount of exercise.

In our Washington, D.C. community, there are many experts and facilities working to help this devastating chronic disease that so many of our relatives, friends and associates can survive. I was “blessed” to fill-in producing a television forum scheduled for air on Sunday, January 29th. On the program three experts appear on NBC-4’s Viewpoint to discuss the vital importance of Chronic Kidney Disease. One key panelist is Dr. Joseph Melancon formerly of Georgetown University Hospital as director of Transplant and Pancreas Surgery. Another is my good friend Ron Minor, photojournalist and transplant patient who has successfully documented in video the story of people on dialysis and with kidney disease. And representing a great community organization helping to place donors for those needing transplant is Flavia Walton of the Links, Inc. –Linkage to Life.   I should mention  the contributions to the field of Dr. Clive O. Callender of Howard University who is considered one our areas foremost spokesperson and surgeons on kidney disease.

Surprisingly, organ donors are mostly found in the white communities. Blacks and Latinos, who are most at risk, don’t contribute to the organ banks as much.  Donating a kidney is not a painful task. God has given us two kidneys and we only need one kidney to live a normal life. The organ banks are under a great amount of pressure because of the supply and demand. Giving a kidney or designating an organ after death can save someone’s life.

This is personal.

I need a kidney… And I hope that it’s God’s will that I receive one, so that I can have a better quality of life and continue to serve my community to its fullest!

STATE OF THE UNION

Thanks Mr. President for your address at the State of the Union this past week.  For the last six or seven months I have been ignoring the news and political forums on the networks and in newspapers because I become nauseous from the rhetoric, childish talks, attacking and finger pointing by politicians running for office. To think, these candidates are reaching for the highest office of the Free World. Yet, during the republican forums, all I could get was little of substance or issues relating to me.

Unfortunately, the U.S Congress has acted the same way. A recent poll showed how much Americans are tired of this political rhetoric and unintelligible in-fighting that we are witnessing on today’s political stage.  Whatever happened to good, mature and sensible speech making? What happened to substance and “issues” on these political forums? I believe average Americans are sick of the nonsense in the public pulpits. As leaders and citizens of the greatest nation in the world…we all need a lesson in respect and civility. Our government needs downsizing, as the president said… but, Mr. President and Congress what we need is harmony, pride and a true united effort to make life better for all Americans. Unity, free discussion of ideas, agreeing and disagreeing can all fit into one wholesome pulpit of progress, if we only listen and work together.

As President Obama ended his address, speaking about what we can do to better our country, the Congress and the people, he said… "Finally, none of this can happen unless we also lower the temperature in this town. We need to end the notion that the two parties must be locked in a perpetual campaign of mutual destruction, that politics is about clinging to rigid ideologies instead of building consensus around commonsense ideas.”  Additionally, he said "This nation is great because we built it together. The nation is great because we worked as a team. This nation is great because we got each other’s backs…the Union will always be strong.”

Thanks Mr. President…

BITS AND PIECES

HARRY THOMAS

Sad, sad, sad… but his actions speak for themselves.  What is wrong with our regional black leaders? In Prince George’s County, Jack Johnson, the former county executive will go to jail.  Leslie Johnson, his wife and former county council member is sentenced to serve time and now D.C. Council member Harry Thomas…is going to jail, too.

All of this jail time for just a few dollars and a big selfish power that “I won’t get caught”.  Still to come, other investigations and inquiries about how monies are spent by leaders in office.  Believe me this embarrassing scenario is not good for  role modeling which is badly needed  in our black community.  Already, much has been discussed and mulled over about the three black leaders going to jail.  And, while many in the surrounding areas and communities are surprised and feeling sorry for the jail-birds… let’s face it… a crook is a crook – and a crook can emerge from some of the most respectable and unexpected areas when exposed…may it be politics, religion or just the neighbor next door.

SHOVELING SNOW

The District Government and the D.C. Council are considering a new snow emergency policy for residents in the city. According to the new law under consideration residents will be responsible for shoveling snow on the sidewalks in front of their home or pay a fine of $25 for homeowners and $ 125.00 for businesses.

Not signed into law yet, the bill to me is very unfair. There are hundreds of citizens who can’t get out onto the slippery, dangerous pavements to shovel snow…plus do a perfect job of cleaning the public sidewalks.  It used to be that a resident could depend on a kid or someone on the block to shovel the snow…not anymore.   I find the law being considered by the government unfair because many residents can’t “physically” get out in the cold and shovel the snow. Many residents are elderly and have health issues that prevent them from participating in such activity. What about the homeowner who is disabled and has no one to help out around the house?

Mr. Mayor… as a part of your new snow emergency plan for the District… please consider the difficulties for hundreds of residents who cannot be responsible for the sidewalk-snow in front of their house. They are many types of snow removal machines and high tech equipment that the city should use to clean the streets and sidewalks. This would be a good time to “hire” some of the D.C. residents looking for a job or students who want to make money on the side.  Many people have no problem paying for the service…if only you could find someone reliable willing to shovel the snow.

METRO IS CALLING FOR A RAISE…

Who are you kidding?  The Metro board of trustees, directors or whatever must be drinking on the job!   No Metro!  Clean up your act, stabilize the escalators, tighten the bolts on the trains so that the parts won’t fall off onto the tracks, secure the bus schedules so that passengers don’t have to wait long times in the cold, make it safer for riders and persons trying to get to work and the list goes on.

Sorry Mr. Metro… your performance doesn’t rate a fair-hike for passengers… rather a better and more dependable service with greater security and customer-friendliness would be a better raise to passengers depending on Metro Bus and Rail.

2012… I CAN’T AFFORD IT!

As soon as I heard everyone wishing me and my friends a Happy New Year…2012… prices everywhere were going up.  2012, I’m facing higher rates to ride a taxi in D.C., higher rates to ride Metro Bus and Rail, higher rates at the food counter at work, higher rates for my cable system, higher rates at the grocery store, rent is going up, D.C. parking meters are going up-even for people with disabilities who will have to pay now, higher rates for entertainment at the local movie house or even to rent a movie… and my preacher keeps saying that I need to put more in the collection box, if I want to get to heaven…

Gee! 2012… I can’t afford you because the one thing I haven’t heard is a higher incentive with pay in the paycheck!

My 2012 New Year's Resolutions

Every year my friends, family and associates go through changes making promises about what the plans and commitments are for the new year.    2012 resolutions are no different.     I hear folks on television, radio and in conversation making New Year’s resolutions, the same ones they made before in 2011.   For 2012, the popular resolutions include: to lose weight, save more money, treat their lover better, their wife or husband with more affection, pray more and eat less.

Well I have a few additional resolutions that I find I must keep in order to keep my sanity for the New Year.  My hopes and promises are as follows:

#1 … Turn off the TV during this presidential election year… the rhetoric and ads are stressful.

#2… Don’t watch another Lady Ga-Ga H.B.O. video…freaky and sick…two half nude men tounge kissing.

#3… If I see Newt at church I will remind him that D.C. black kids need jobs… not his stereotypical sickness

#4… Pray hard for more “intelligence” on the political scene and less stupid attacks on each other.

#5… Pray for better Metro service… especially better escalators on the Red Line.

#6… Make a recommendation to D.C. resident to hold another city government election or a recall.

#7… Get an extra job, so that I can afford to pay for an hour on the parking meters in downtown D.C.

#8… Give Pepco some extra batteries to keep my lights on during the snow, wind and rain storms

#9… Buy a helicopter so I won’t drive and hit all of those “no rules of the road” bicyclists on the streets

# 10… I pray that the Tea-Party wakes up and join Occupy Wall Street or Occupy DC to unite America.

Like everyone else with New Year’s resolutions… I’ll give myself until February to see if they come true…

“U” STREET AND THEATER

Beginning the first of January, 2012, oversight for the Lincoln Theater will be handed over to the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities.   Prior to December 31st, the theater has been operated by the “U Street Theater Foundation (USTF).  The Foundation showed  little professionalism to the community by the selection of cheap and tacky plays at the theater.   I’m glad to see the change.   The new oversight will include the hiring of a new executive director and a new outreach of features for the theater. For one thing, top rated movies will be a part of the daily activities and audiences in the upper part of town can now return to “U” Street to go to the theater.

Growing up in D.C., I can remember when “U” Street theater-going was classy and the “in-thing” to do.  Of course times have changed and “U” street as it was once known is now an avenue of gentrified sites, sounds and people. During the forties, fifties and sixties, the atmosphere on America’s black mega street for jazz, drama, nightclubs and dancing was heightened by fashion and the setting for Duke Ellington’s “Sophisticated Lady”.   The street was “jumping” with night life and flare. It was nothing to see the stars and musicians like the late Pearl Bailey, the Duke, Count Basie and other great artists stroll along the great way on “U” Street. The Howard and Republic theaters were hot and the ladies of the night were models of dignity.

I’m glad to see the new life revitalizing Washington’s “U” Street. Thank you Mayor Vincent Gray, a Washingtonian, for making the changes at the Lincoln Theater that will bring life to the lights of that great place of performers.   Now with some positive shows, jazz concerts and movies the Lincoln will live again and not be a burden to the city.  We have a great deal of talent in our town and the attractions should really be worthwhile. One suggestion, Mr. Mayor…let’s move the D.C. Youth Orchestra in residence at the Lincoln.

BREASTFEEDING IS NOT INDECENT – REGARDLESS WHERE

How embarrassing were the security people at the D.C. Department of Motor Vehicles when they stopped a mother with her child because of what they thought was indecent exposure?   The mother said to news outlets that she was humiliated, shocked and embarrassed when she was nursing her baby son and the security guards pulled her aside and wanted to charge her with indecency.   The mother was told by the two security people that breastfeeding was not allowed in a corridor of a government building.

The problem is that the D.C. security guards were grossly misinformed, as they can be often.   The law in the District of Columbia, according to Ward One’s councilmember Jim Graham, allows any mother to breastfeed in public.  Graham wrote the law.   In this day and time, I thought that breastfeeding in public was pretty much acceptable all over. The mother (victim) never got an apology from the D.C. Government’s security or officials. It would be nice if the security guards in the “Public Government” facilities receive more training and increased "positive customer awareness" in their procedures.

A FUNCTIONAL CONGRESS? FROM REPUBLICANS?

What are the republicans on Capitol Hill trying to prove? It’s their lack of human sensitivity for the good of the people.    Rather it’s a game-play with these congress people, Tea Partiers and so called conservatives.  These political bodies are using their grandstanding and bickering at the last minute to play the political game of "not supporting the President".   The American voters should see just what is happening on the Hill.   Rather than passing bills and legislation to keep people working or to help the less fortunate who depend on a pay check from Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and programs to help the middle class, this congressional body has become a hindrance to progress and moving ahead

This is the worst U.S. Congress in many decades. Few bills or strong helpful legislature for the citizen’s benefit have been passed. But, the lawmen are good at pointing fingers and blaming others…like at President Obama. It’s ridiculous of these elected officials to display this type of  foolishness and focus on self-serving interests. As I look at the U.S. Congress of 2010 through 2012… It’s shameful the insensitivity on the Hill.   We call it "America, the United”, but as I see the agenda of our lawmakers… unity is not their priority.

A TRUE CHRISTMAS AND SANTA…

Next week, Christmas will come upon us and the sense of joy and goodwill will unfold.  My major concern is how much we refer to Christmas and yet we seem to forget the real purpose of the Christmas story. For the 2.1 billion Christians in the world, this feast day is the beginning of new life.   Born 2000 years ago was the King of Kings, the Prince of Peace and the Lord of all Lords. Christmas is not the gifts, the tree, Jingle Bells or parties… it means a great deal more to the believers in a Nativity for mankind.

These beliefs are wonderful in telling the story of Christmas, but my concern is how we seem to erase the true meaning and replace it with strong secular-commercial celebration and pleasures. Santa Clause is fun and the games and stories about Santa can be good for little children. Today we talk about Santa, but we forget Old Saint Nicolas, a European bishop who gave children prizes and shared his goodwill with his neighbors during the third century in a little town called Patara. The town was a Greek settlement in the third century off the coast of Turkey. Bishop Nicholas came from a wealthy family who raised him to be a true follower of the life of Christ. The first “Santa” St. Nicholas was persecuted for his Christian beliefs by the Romans and died in December of 343 AD.

There are many warm and interesting stories about Christmas, and the goodwill of men and women throughout the ages. I would enjoy the spirits of joy and peace more if only in today’s world truer stories about the season were revealed. I would really enjoy Christmas more if the commercial world could lay-off and treat the season as a time for love and hope and peace.  But, face it…the commercial greed of Madison Avenue and big corporations must make the last buck on the backs of the Christmas story.  I like gifts and I believe in giving gifts… but, let’s be reasonable! And, remember the best Christmas gift from any Santa is the gift of LOVE! And to me, God is LOVE…

AND NOW POLITICS

Believe it or not, it looks good for President Obama, but horrible for American “Leadership” intelligence.   Newt, baby, needs to look at himself in the mirror and see for himself what others outside of the box see. Newt converted to Catholicism during the last decade, yet his Christian roots are very questionable. The man has divorced two times and is now married to a staffer who used to sing in the choir at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. Hypocrisy is like a Halloween costume…it can only hide a face…not the real person. In fact, he bought the choir robes, according to sources at the Shrine.  Well Newt, I doubt if you can buy your way into Heaven. Thank God!

Still, his Catholic-Christian roots are strange. How can you be a Christian and deny the poor, or tell lies about poor black children in D.C.? And that the young D.C. teens know little about working because “they don’t have good work habits” or role models inside their homes. According to the Washington Post, one 17-year old teen at Ballou Senior High School responded to Newt’s poisonous words by saying that he (teen) has a job in an auto shop and earns enough money to help at home. Another is a 16-year old young woman who interned at the U.S. Department of Transportation last summer and tells of  earning money to help with her education.  And so, the success stories about teens working in D.C. from poor homes or average family backgrounds continues.

Newt, you missed the boat picking on D.C. teens. Who will be next? Seniors…

A NATIONAL BAN OF DRIVER’S CELL PHONE USE

GOOD!   The National Transportation Safety Board is recommending that all electronic devices used in the car while driving should be banned except in an emergency.  According to the agency, from a AAA Mid-Atlantic survey, 56 % of drivers on the Capital Beltway use cell phones and twitter while driving.  Regardless how you use the device while driving, cell phones, twittering or the use of so-called "hands free" instruments, it’s a distraction and lives are a stake.

Thanks to the N.T.S.B.’s Deborah Hersman, chair of the Board, someone has some sense and puts safety first. And thanks to AAA Mi- Atlantic for the survey and reports which is living proof of the reality of reckless and dangerous driving on our highways and streets.  As John Townsend of AAA Mid-Atlantic would put it… you can’t multi-task while driving.

HIGHER TAXIE RATES AND SAME SERVICE

D.C. cab drivers are seeking new rates for their services of operating taxies in the city. The D.C. Taxicab Commission held hearings recently on higher rates for D.C. cabs.   The Commission heard arguments about why the cabbies need more money.   A petition was presented calling for a significant change in taxi fares for the city.   Among many of the persons testifying before the commission a good percentage of people on the street would disagree that the cabbies should receive a raise.

The proposal for higher rates was presented by a D.C. cab driver who operates an independent cab. The proposal called for a base for all cabs would be lower but the mile rates would increase. The rate would go from $ 3 to $ 2.75 and the millage rates would go from $1.50 to $2.75.

Higher taxicab rates for D.C. cabs are one thing, but my concern is the way taxies in the city are operating to best serve the consumer. Along with the higher rates it would be good if the individual cab drivers could go through a “customer-friendly” training course. Some of the attitudes by the drivers can be very rude and often inconsiderate of how to treat the public.

Growing up in D.C., I can remember how the “old” D.C. Cabbies operated clean vehicles, and presented themselves with respectable attitudes and a certain dignity.  Today, I find too many cabdrivers operating without the courtesy and respectability for the passenger. Some play their radios loud, others talk on cell phones, some can’t speak English very well, while worst of all many often don’t know the city streets.  The absolute worst is when they greet you with a sour attitude.  Good if the cabbies can get a raise because everybody needs incentives…but let’s clean up the act by treating passengers better.

REASSESSING REALLY MEANS...GOODBY!

Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain has told his campaign staff that he is "reassessing" his run for president of the United Sates on the republican ticket.   The latest accusations against the candidate may be the final blow to his achieving even a penny toward winning the G.O.P. ticket.   Didn’t we know from the beginning, that Mr. Cain would not make it to the national ticket for the republicans?  We referenced this likely outcome in our blog last summer.   Sorry Mr. Cain you are in the wrong party… the “Good O’ Boy’s Club”.

There’s less than 36 days before the republican caucuses in Iowa. It was obvious that some crazy accusations would surface to reduce your chances of becoming a black candidate for president on the G.O.P. ticket.  You served your purpose… and you got plenty of publicity and a few national recognitions while your name was in the news… but we knew it that it wouldn’t last. By-the-way, how much are your pizzas, Mr. Pizza man?

CHANGE MEANS EVERYTHING

Last week, Mayor Vincent Gray made some changes in his top staffing at the District (Wilson) Building. The mayor announced that he has hired a new communications director and deputy chief of staff. Both staffers come from Capitol Hill. Sheila Bunn, the new deputy chief of staff, worked for Congresswoman Eleanor Holms Norton and the new communications director, Pedro Riberio comes from the office of Congressman Zoe Lofgren of California.

Good move Mr. Mayor.   Communications in the right director’s hands should help you  overcome some of the bad publicity that has marred the early stages of your mayoral seat. A better image means everything,  and I still think that you can become a mayor for the people…as you put it…”One City”…which takes one good leader.    Ms. Bunn is well known around D.C. circles and she is a strong leader in her own right. She should do well with the team that you are putting together. I don’t want a one-term mayor…we just want a strong, productive and positive mayoral leadership.

LET’S CALL IT WHAT IT REALLY IS…

Now that Thanksgiving and Christmas are upon us… let’s not forget what these special days are about.   Both holidays are about giving thanks and celebrating the birth of Christ, if you are Christian.  And, even if you are not …one should still respect the meaning of these special days of thanks and love.
In a world where we are more in-tune to the latest high-tech gadget, it seems as though we are forgetting to be human and to accept each other with warmth and compassion. So maybe to appreciate the holidays of Thanksgiving and Christmas, let’s call it as it is… Thanksgiving and Christmas…  and not just "the holidays", Xmas, "the season", Black Friday on Thanksgiving Day, and the secular celebration of Santa instead of the celebration of Christ.

NO JOB, BAD ECONOMY… WHOSE BROKE IN AMERICA?

I constantly hear about the 13 million Americans without jobs and how tough the times are in our great country of prosperity and hope. It causes me to wonder. If our nation is so broke as the politicians and media “know-it-alls” claim, than why do I see so many spectators attending the N.F.L., M.B.L and the N.B.A. games?  Every Sunday afternoon and on those other game days I see millions of Americans packing the stadiums across the country on Saturday and Sunday and Monday and Thursdays.

Think about it… the stadiums are packed.  So let’s do the math. Of course I’m not a mathematician or economist… but, I do use my five senses to comprehend the American sports scene. To me its common sense that someone is fooling somebody about how tough we are living the American dream. I enjoy sports, especially football, but boy someone must be rich.  I can only afford my TV coverage and some good old home cooked popcorn. A cheap date for about $25 which includes the corn, my Fios and TV set. Most games only last about three hours, so my budget is on target.

There are 32 professional teams in the National Football League (NFL). The National Basketball Association houses 30 teams and there are 30 teams in the Major Baseball league. Beside the salary count of the players involved, I’m interested in the cost of going to a game for our suffering Americans. The average stadium in most cities will hold at least 80,000 spectators. According to USA Today, here are some ticket prices for major teams… an average across the board. Tickets for the Redskins range from $29-$100, Atlanta Falcons- $55-112.50, $ 25-190 for the New York Giants and some $ 70 to 95 for Philly Eagles. In 2009 the N.F.L. racked in some $345 Million which is a good margin for how much is spent on basketball and baseball.

This year sports tickets have increased, according to USA Today and several sports magazines around the nation. The average person buying these tickets are everyday hard working Americans. It’s great to see the fun that we all can have if one can afford to buy a sports ticket to see their favorite team. Again, I just wonder how broke are we? Oh’ I forgot, a hotdog and a drink cost about $25 at the stadium.

NASCAR …First Lady Michele Obama and Dr. Jill Biden were invited to a NASCAR event. A noticeable number in the audience booed the First Lady when she was introduced. Well… what do you expect? To me NASCAR is an arena of little boys playing with their toys. I have heard some people describe NASCAR as a bunch of rednecks and rich back country boys who have never reached out to involve blacks, Latinos or Asians to be a part of the Ole’ Boys club. I’m not into car racing, but I respect those who love the sport. Still, we all need to dignify our First Lady and President, regardless one’s political agenda.

THE GAP OF REALITY AND THE HILL POLITICIAN

I have often asked myself, “How can the people in congress understand the day-to-day struggles of the average American raising families, keeping a job, going to school and putting food on the table?”  Do they really have a clue about the reasoning for healthcare or the older citizens who depend on Social Security?  We hear a lot about the lack of jobs and how 12% of the American population is out of work.  You can find a great deal of fussing and finger pointing on Capitol Hill about the economy and how Americans are suffering through these days of economic strife.

But do the people on the Hill who make the laws and criticize each other -- including the president -- really understand?  And can they really make a sound decision about how taxpayers and citizens can meet the ever increasing cost-of-living? Democrats tend to vote on issues that relate to the poor, middle class and working man…while Republicans are the supporters of wealthy America, especially Corporate America.

According to Roll Call News Service, there is congressional wealth on the Hill.  The incomes of members in the U.S. House amount to $4,670,831. In the U.S. Senate the amount of member’s salaries can come to $13,989,022. This wealth can be found on both sides of the aisle.  Republicans make up 80% of the wealth and Democrats a little less because they are not the majority in congress.

The current salary of a rank and file congress person is $174,000 per year. Plus, another $ 20,000 is added on for majority and minority leaders, according to Politicus-USA. The average household salaries during 2010 ranged in the $46,000 for a single wage owner and $67,000 for two home wage earners. These figures can vary, but one can really question if most of our congressional leaders have a clue about the realities of everyday America and the cost of making ends meet.

MONROE STREET MARKET, NE

Great idea! Catholic University has relinquished some of its land among Monroe Street to developers to build an in town shopping and “mix-use” center.  The center will include retail stores, 700 apartments, 45 townhouses, space for community centers and food restaurants.    Along the Michigan Avenue corridor, the development will bring new life to an area that seems to be developing more in its neighborhoods around Catholic University.   Not too far away are the medical institutions of Washington Hospital Center, Children’ and Veteran’s Hospitals. The new “mix” center will benefit many new families moving into the area, students at the university and those who work in the area … what an ideal piece of marketing on the behalf of the developers.

Already there are Coronel Brooks, San Antonio’s restaurants and a dozen of takeout places at 12 and Monroe, NE.  There is some opposition to the new Northeast development.  A group of neighbors and community ANCs have expressed concerns about more congestion along Michigan Avenue and more crowded parking around Monroe Street.  There is a Metro-rail at the Catholic University stop, but still there are some traffic and crowding concerns of residential home owners in the area.

All-in-all, the new development providing housing for moderate income people and a good business variety in the city is very positive. Mayor Vincent Gray assisted with the ground breaking last week of the new urban project and many city leaders seem to favor the new venture. If it’s anything like the 14th & Park Road in-town development it will serve a needed purpose.

CONGRESS BUTT OUT!!!

A leading House Republican has agreed to set aside a bill that would have required criminal background checks for political appointees in the District of Columbia, according to the Washington Post and NBC-4  Tom Sherwood.    Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) says he won’t take action on the bill until the New Year (2012).  This week, the congressman in a telephone conversation talked with D.C. Council Chairman Kwame Brown about his bill. C hairman Brown meanwhile explained to the congressman that he would pass a similar bill in the D.C. Council by year’s end.

The congressman is head of government oversight House committee which oversees the District Government.  Mr. Issa why are you proposing something that the District government has already started to process?  Plus, there is already a Federal investigation into the allegations against various councilmembers and the mayor. Is this another way for republicans on the Hill will use their powers to shame the District?  Or does the good congressman have nothing much to focus these days on the Hill.  Are you saying with your “crime watch” bill that all D.C. government employees or leaders are criminals with records? Government employees are already examined when they apply for government work and elected office.   Mr. Issa called his bill a “bulwark against cronyism”.  Congressman you are “out right” meddling into the affairs of the leaders of 600,000 taxpayers who don’t have any voice in the House to address your concerns.  Why don’t you spend your invaluable moments presenting a bill to give D.C. citizens the all American right…the right to be represented in congress?

Mr. Issa… BUTT OUT and tend to “trying to take back America,” the “code word” slogan of the republican party these days.

REMEBERING THOSE WHO SERVED

Veteran’s Day is Friday, November 11th.  There are many ways to thank the veterans in our communities who have served and protected our great nation. Maybe, invite a vet to dinner and make it a special day of salute and thanks.   Donate to the various charities for veterans. One charity that I constantly donate to is the Disabled Veterans of America. Another is the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the various services of the American Red Cross.  The U.S.O. is good avenue to find veterans and to seek information about the services the women and men are involved with oversees and here on the Homeland.

Many religious groups will hold services in honor of our American veterans.  In some towns parades will be held and special events will take place to salute the veterans of those communities.  Today, for many veterans and their families, the road of readjustment can be rough.  After active duty in faraway lands, many veterans are looking for jobs and better housing to support their families. Many have received a great deal of good training in fields of technology, aviation, electronics, management and public service, so these talents are valuable to our communities and nation.

Happy Veteran’s Day America!

BIG BROTHER IN FOREST HEIGHTS...

Crime busting tactics in Forest Heights have taken a turn.   A former mayor of the town of 3,000 purchased five new “crime” cameras to combat crime.   My buddy Pat Collins of NBC4 Washington News reported that the town already has one “speed” camera, and the new ones will be paid for by the revenues from this existing speed camera.  The current mayor told Collins that they might have to “hold a yard sale” if the camera-use is voted against by the citizens.   Another former mayor weighs into the debate and opposes the “crime” cameras because he objects to “Big Brother” in the residential community peeping through the windows and watching their privacy.

This is an interesting piece of information.   Number 1, the cameras have already been purchased and now may not be put to good use...a waste of tax money and risky judgment.   # 2, the town of Forest Heights, which is located in Prince George’s County, has only one stop light.  # 3… the town purchased five cameras to cover the entire town which is about half the size of Southeast Washington!

So… a thought for the criminals who want to prey on good old Forest Heights, Maryland , if you like being on “Candid Camera” while doing your wrong…come to Forest Heights and be sure to bring your make-up kit.

WATCH HOW YOU DRIVE IN P.G. COUNTY

Prince George’s County will install more cameras for bad drivers in the county. Already, the county has collected some $527,000 over the year. You will pay $40 a ticket if photographed speeding or going through a red light.  According to Prince George’s officials, they need the money!

Boy… I’m staying out of Prince George’s County!

HEARTBREAKING

In our communities, we are all familiar with the sad heartbreaking stories of victims of crime and violence.  Domestic violence is without a doubt one of the most terrifying heartbreaks for many victims and innocent children. But, this week, our minds and hearts were torn apart as we learned about the brutal murder of a mother and her son in Montgomery County. We have witnessed via news reports this haunting story that will stay with us, and with those who respect any sense of innocence and respect for human life, a very long time.

William McQuain, 11 years old, a young child who loved being a little boy and doing little boy things…like riding a bike, or rolling along the streets on his shoe wheels, fond of his schoolmates and the day-to-day fun and learning. I don’t know William McQuain, but he was a boy of innocence, and as I look at his picture in the paper or on TV…I’m brokenhearted!  Pictures can say many things.  His youthful smile, handsome, childish face and the cap on his head could make little William the model of any “Madison Avenue” sales pitch because of that positive –innocent look he bore.

Domestic violence is a sickness by those who cause the violence. Normally, according to therapists and experts, domestic violence is a practice by the perpetrator to overpower their victims for their own selfish purposes. Such is very sad and dangerous when one lives under the roof of domestic violence.  Too many mothers, girlfriends and wives… and even some men suffer the fears and threats of danger because they are living in an aggressive violent situation. Domestic Violence is not the answer…simply because of one’s selfish and insecure attitudes about life and those subjected to them.  But, when it comes to killing the innocence of a child or the warm loving hopes of a mother… than all I can say is…"Heartbreaking”.

THEY ARE STANDING UP FOR SOMETHING

Over the past three weeks, I have heard from various sources and concerned citizens about the “Wall Street” protestors around the nation and the “Occupy DC” campaign downtown at Freedom Plaza.  There are pros and cons for those who find the demonstrations to be a strong permanent voice of middle and lower class  people with anger.  These are good folks who want a piece of the American pie, too.

Regardless of one’s opinion about the protests… these people are taking a stand about America’s direction under Capitalism and the very rich.  The new front-runner of the G.O.P presidential candidates, Herman Cain, a black pizza maker, called the demonstrations “un-American”.  Isn’t this the same guy who said that “racism in America is no longer a problem”?  Well these are two issues, so let’s focus on the one “un-American”.   Cain, like many “I have arrived” voices see the protesters who are speaking out against the abusiveness of Capitalism, greed, charging the filthy rich to pay their fair share… as people who want to corrupt the American way.

I’m sorry Mr. Cain these protestors are speaking on my behalf. You have the Tea Party and the GOP speaking on your behalf. The protestors are not un-American. What is un-American, is when I hear Rush Limbaugh say “I hope the president (Obama) fails” on the public airways!  It’s un-American when Sarah Palin says that we need to “take back our country”… the code is... the White House is in the wrong hands of color.   How American are we, when Congressman Wilson of South Carolina yells out “you are a liar” during the State of the Union Address by President Obama?

I’m proud to be an American! Protests and challenges from such a public forum, like the Wall Street demonstrators and Occupy DC people are very American. More American than those in your camp who want to cut teacher’s jobs, Social Security benefits for the elderly, deny immigrants a chance to be a part of the “American Dream”, advocates for insurance corporates, health & pharmaceuticals deregulations and the profits of bankers, corporate C.E.O.s and Wall Street fat guys. Thanks Street Voices!!!

A TRUE PROFESSIONAL

His name is Joe Barber.   I met Joe in 1990 when we were doing a morning television show for D.C.’s cable system.   Joe asked to do his very first movie reviews on the municipal morning program.   Strange as it seemed to present movie reviews on a government news/public affairs program, Joe made his movie information most helpful.   Joe was always eager and professional to learn the broadcast business and to do his best to give his listeners and viewers his best performance.

Over the years, we can remember movie critics and reviewers. For a long time and still today, Arch Campbell held that spot and was the voice-critic to hear about our entertainment hopes. Across the screen and in the local newspapers, you can find plenty of entertainment critiques, but locally the one voice who related to my desires to know what to see was the voice of Joe Barber.

As said in the Washington Post Obituary article about Joe, he was a fixture at theaters and galleries since launching his freelance journalism career of more than three decades.  Joe landed jobs with WTOP Radio, Howard University Television-WHUT, and later became a regular critic on show topics for WETA Channel 26. Thanks Joe. It was a great pleasure knowing you and working with you. It was truly a comfort to work with a gentleman and a movie/theater historian who had a great passion for movie entertainment. Joe Barber died this past Monday in his D.C. home. He was 53.

WHO’S WATCHING THE TRIGGER?

Recently, a 2-year old boy was shot and killed in his Oxon Hill apartment; an area in Prince George’s County, Maryland.  According to Prince George’s County Police the boy was shot in the head.   Only later to learn that the boy actually shot himself while playing with a gun, according to authorities.   Police found the gun on the scene and the question was what adult, or if any adults were in the home, when the tragedy occurred.   After the Police investigation, police stated that the little boy’s mother was in the home in another room at the time of the shooting.

Was it not just about a month ago when a 4-year old shot a 5-year old child on a playground while the boys were playing?  And, what about the young teens who were playing Russian roulette at home when one of the youngsters was killed? Also,  do you recall in Woodbridge, Virginia, a son shooting his father while sleeping in bed?   Often we hear about these tragic incidents of children getting killed or hurt because a gun was left unattended.   The law in most states and localities declares that guns must be locked up and put in a safe place out of the reach of children.

According to a gun safety organization, a spokesperson says that 40% of gun owners fail to secure their firearms in their homes with children*.   Guns left out in the open are dangerous and are easy triggers for a loved one to get hurt, killed or wreak havoc on another.  According to a police spokesman from the Prince George’s County, “a 20-year old can pull the trigger of a gun that’s left out”.   The officer explained that gun-triggers are very sensitive and can be activated in a matter of seconds and with little or no strength.

Children can move very quickly throughout the home, and involve themselves in everything!  Guns are fast too… all the more reason why the two don’t mix…Lock up and be Safe in every home…better than regretting the worst!

THEIR FUTURES DESTROYED OVER AN IPOD

The Bowie State University recent incident of the young woman allegedly stabbing to death her fellow roommate after arguing over the use of an IPOD is senseless and sad.   The stabbing took place during the early evening when most students were preparing for a weekend of fun and pride because it was homecoming time at the university.

What is very sad is that, these young minds are now destroyed.   The victim, according to news reports, was a brilliant, talented and pleasant young woman. Most likely, all involved are bright young people who wanted to achieve those next steps of getting a formal education.   Yet, something as simple as disagreeing, arguing and hot tempers can cause such a very sad ending...in seconds. Their whole lives are out the window because one young college student will most likely spend considerable time in jail and the other college student,  the victim, will be buried in the ground.   This is truly a very sad scenario of reality in our community and society.   Life is so short!   Why lessen the timeline because of an IPOD?   Or because “I can’t just have my way”…

THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT

On every stage and from every desk or pin setting, there are those who follow you, disagree with you and support you in your presentations of opinions and thoughts. So, from our dcmetrotalk.com files, I want to mention three people who have followed this Blog from day one. They are serious about the issues and the daily life in D.C.      They are citizens or home owners who wish to open their minds to a variety of opinions, facts and platforms that address the lifestyles and everyday concerns of us all.

A special thanks to Katie, my friend who has been so supportive and will disagree with me in-A-second.  Next, there’s DC Lady, I don’t know who she is but thanks for the comments and I can tell you are a true “DC lover”.  Also there’s Big Fan. Who I imagine will share his thoughts and opinions with any person who wants to bring change or progress. I don’t know Big Fan, but thanks for your comments.

SEX, STUDENTS AND SCHOOL TESTING!

This week, I received an interesting press release from the Center for Disease Control about testing D.C. students in grades 6, 8 and 10 on sexual behavior and the facts of the “Birds and Bees”.  The idea and legislation to implement this program in the D.C. Schools were initiated by Councilwoman Mary Cheh of Ward Three.  According to the press release, the D.C. government will include health education questions (including sexual and reproductive health) on a survey to be released and delivered to every student in the District.    It’s called the 2012 Comprehensive Assessment Survey (CAS).

Granted the city has always had very high rates of teenage pregnancy, HIV, sexually transmitted diseases and obesity. During the mid-Eighties, I can remember the studies and promises made by school and government officials about reducing those high rates involving teen sex problems.  I recall working with Dr. Joyce Ladner of Howard University on data and forums held in many schools having to do with “Children Having Children”.   Since then, more studies, tests and even community outreach programs have tried to address the problem of sexual activities among youth.

The question about the use of tests to educate or to better inform young people about their sexual involvement may be difficult in the classroom.  Are “teachers” ready, knowledgeable or equipped to teach sex and the facts of life in the overly burdened D.C. classrooms of today?  Where are the parents? One parent in a Washington Post article was more concerned with how many tests kids are taking already.

Many young people get answers to their early inquisitiveness about sex from peers and others around them. The social media and promiscuity on television, cable and video have filled their heads with information and saturation of sex, “how-to-do-it” and how easy it is to do it...without sharing the consequences.  Today, the TV rating system for “permissible” television for youngsters is a big joke.  Yes, the media is the message. Furthermore, the message in everything in the media is Sex and Violence. They are making money, and kids buy the media message.

Yes, it’s good to know what our young people think, and the testing outcomes will help us help them in their daily lives and actions.  But, I can’t support giving teachers in the schools the responsibility of being the “Sex Expert” and teaching to test students the same way you teach to test students on achievement exams in math, english and science.   Finally, PARENTS aren’t you more responsible than the teacher, the stranger or some outside source?  Do your part at home! Especially at their very early ages… Make it a family test!!!

IT’S STUPID…THE PANTS DOWN DRESS CODE

Young men… who told you that wearing your pants half-way down your “butt” is cool, decent or even intelligent?  Why do you think I want to see your “bloomers”?  If it’s a fad, than please do yourself a favor and move on because the fad won’t get you a job, and it won’t help you to make a decent paycheck.   Plus,  the fad certainly won’t gain any points with a “good” woman who would make a “good” girlfriend or wife.

There have been several job-fairs and job opportunities for young people in the area. Even jobs for students during the summer work programs.  Believe it or not, some of the young applicants appearing for interviews wear their pants below the belt-waist and dressed like they are going to a bull fight. N O I’m not old fashioned, out-of-date or suffering from senility.  Common sense is simply common sense… wear your clothes like a gentleman or like the man you hope to be. P ull the pants up and, than strut your strut!

THE COMMUNITY WAS HER HEART

Nadine P. Winter died. The former first elected representative of Ward Six on the D.C. Council was a giant amongst us for her commitment, outreach, and concern for the city's poor.  Nadine passed this past week, after illness at the age of 87.  Nadine will be remembered by many older D.C. citizens because she was so instrumental in providing “fair-affordable” housing for so many.  For 16 years, Nadine worked to make a difference in our city and in a Ward that was divided between the haves and have-nots (now Capitol Hill).

Did you know? Nadine operated one of the first shelters for homeless people in the District.  Additionally, she fought for rent-control in the city. She chaired the council’s Committee on Public Works, where she initiated the law to recycle in the city and she founded a scholarship foundation for poor kids to get an education.

I remember Nadine.  For her 16 years on the council, and above all her work for the poor of the city.  Nadine…the city isn’t the same!  Thanks for your tremendous contribution.

WHERE’S MALCOLM X PARK?

I have no ill feelings about the changing face of Washington, D.C. May it be gentrification or new people on the block? But, to ignore and to change the name of Malcolm X Park is a sly way of saying we just don’t respect the energies that black citizens in D.C. worked for. The Washington Post and other outlets have forgotten that Meridian Hill Park was named, by the community and the city leaders of the 70’s…Malcolm X Park…named after the black leader who gave his life’s work for human rights and fair justice for all. The reporter of the Post, Akeya Dickson is asking in the Post column, should soccer be played in “Meridian Hill Park?”  Why don’t reporters do their homework? Why don’t you “come-over-night” journalists do some research and ask local community folks about the neighborhoods and parks established in the city?

I’m shocked, that the black leaders in city government haven’t taken this issue to task. Especially Mayor Vincent Gray, who grew up in D.C. and was on the scene when the park was named after the great Muslim leader…during the civil rights years in the city. Where is Marion Barry, Kwame Brown, Michael Brown, Bowser of Ward 4 and Alexander of Ward 7? Why haven’t they called to question omitting Malcolm X’s name at the park?

Malcolm X Park is a great place on Sunday afternoons. The park is a platform for the sounds and drum rhythms, for local vocal groups performing, the grassroots speakers with their point of view on life and the gathering of many folks from various cultural backgrounds. Let’s keep it Malcolm X Park! Who was Meridian???

We're Driving Too Fast!

Over the past month, more than ten people have died on the roads and highways in the D.C. metropolitan area.  According to news reports, the automobile accidents in the area had to do with speed and drinking.  One lady missed death, but was rescued from her burning Hummer while talking on her cell phone.  Most of us will drive five to ten miles over the speed limit.  And, we all know how to “slow down” around those street cameras and speed zones.  But driving on the Beltway or the major highways in Maryland and Virginia, I find that many drivers will excel over the speed limit by twenty or thirty miles per hour.  I see young adults and many anxious drivers cutting in and out, tailgating and driving as if they are at the racetrack.  Aggressive driving was a big issue a couple of years ago, but believe me… aggressive driving seems to be more prevalent today than ever before.

We all drive too fast!  We all are more distracted today while driving!  Driving is not a multitask function… complete and alert attention may just save your life.
SLOW DOWN!!!!

Does Being Mean Really Pay?

A recent study has been released by Notre Dame University on why people who are mean and arrogant will get ahead and make more money on the job.  The title of the study is “Do Nice Guys and Gals Really Finish Last?”  According to the study-survey, men who are disagreeable on the job were paid 18% more and women were paid %5 more for their meanness.  The study was co-authored by Cornell University professor Beth Livingston and Timothy Judge of Notre Dame.

According to the authors, managers on jobs “often don’t realize that they reward disagreeableness”.  The study was conducted from 10,000 workers and some 400 students in business education.  According to the study by researchers “agreeable” workers make substantially lower pay than their disagreeable counterparts… with the gap wider among men.

Well!  What goes around comes around!   Is this a crazy study or a very unfortunate discovery at a time when we seem to be more rude, impolite and intolerant of each other?   I can imagine what “arrogance and disagreeableness” must be like in the workplace.  Does this mean that we are more competitive? Or, that one’s “disagreeableness” is justifiable and acceptable by those who work around you or even your supervisor?  Really! Who wants to be associated with people who are grouch and fussy or crabby? I’m sorry, life is too short. Plus one’s positive attitude can go a long way in creating a healthy environment.   Being “disagreeable” is senseless and in most civil workplaces, I sincerely doubt  a negative attitude will get you more pay.   There’s an old saying, “you can win more flies with a little honey than smacking your way through life."

PARENTS  SHOULD BE SPECTATORS AND ROLE MODELS…

According to MSNBC.com… parents at a Maryland little league game broke out into a fight because they were angry and upset at the rulings and officiating of the games.    Police in Boonsborop, Maryland were called to stop a fight involving parents and other spectators at the game.     The tournament game between the West End and Sharpsburg Maryland Little League was coming to an end when parents decided to take things into their own hands.     According to the Herald-Mail newspaper some parents were harassed who represented the players of opposite teams.  One parent reported that she was hit with stones and yelled at with “derogatory” slurs.  Some 50 people were involved.   No arrests were made.

All I can say is that adults should set the example before their little leaguers.  We hear of these types of stories every day.  The youth games are important and can be great family fun, but let’s not get carried away. Whatever happened to “Good Sportsmanship”?  Where is the spirit of fair play, loser or winner and what ever happened to being a positive role model?  I see bad parenting everywhere.  I see parents who let their kids run wild in restaurants, in churches, on the bus and in a neighbor’s house.  As adults, have we become too liberal about practicing good manners, respect and domestic-family pride?  Be a good parent… maybe our elderly parents and grandparents were right… “children  are to be seen and not heard”  But granny also said, “be the mother or father, not the child”

WALTER REED, A MEMORABLE NEIGHBOR

As a fifth generation Washingtonian, I have remembered Walter Reed Hospital and military complex as one of the D.C. places that was very special to everyone all over the world.  As a child I can recall  “that was the hospital where presidents go”.  I can remember, during my teen years, after the Korean War and Viet Nam… how injured soldiers and service people were treated at Walter Reed.

In  Ward Four, along Georgia Avenue and 16th Street Walter Reed stood out like a “mighty statue of comfort and care” for those who fought overseas .  As a kid, I can remember the stories my father would tell us about how the wounded soldiers of World War II would be flown to Bolling Air Force Base in Southwest… and transported to Walter Reed for care.  I remember living around 16th and “T” and “S” Streets, hearing the sirens of the presidential motorcades speeding up the “Street of presidents”, 16th Street.

For more than a century Walter Reed has served and cared for hundreds of thousands of people.  From my childhood, I know of  many friends who went into medicine and studied through the military medical systems at Walter Reed.  I fondly recall the dances at the NCO on the Walter Reed campus on the weekends. The entertaining gatherings were held and one could attend them by invitation from a serviceman.  There were many times, while living at 14th and Aspen, I had the chance to look over the fence and gaze at the hospital where some of my neighbors worked or served their military time.

Walter Reed will move to Bethesda from upper Northwest D.C. because it’s a part of the BRAC program of military realignment. The new state of the art medical facility, The National Military Medical Center is very nice for the advancements in medical care….   So, I will hold onto these priceless childhood memories of this good neighbor.  Walter Reed: A neighboring legacy.

ARE CURFEW LAWS A WASTE OF TIME?

In Montgomery County, officials are proposing a stiff curfew law that will ban young people under 18 from the streets after a certain hour.  Officials feel that a youth curfew in the county will help curtail some of the problems police are having with loitering teens and gangs late at night.  The target area of concern is Silver Spring.  Officials believe that the crime and rowdy young activity in Silver Spring takes place because many youngsters come to Montgomery County from the District and Prince George’s County where there are curfew laws on the books.

In a Washington Post article by Mike Rosenwald, titled "Do curfew laws actually work? ", a poll was taken by 105 readers.   The results which showed that 77% feel that curfews do not deter crime and 23% felt that the curfew laws are good.      Talking with several young people in D.C., where there is a curfew law, the teens felt that those who commit crime or act out in bad behavior “will get around” laws.

In D.C., it’s common to see youngster’s underage on the streets after midnight in many parts of the city.  Curfew laws are good to have on the books to say that you (officials) are doing something to stop criminal activity by teens or underage youth on the streets.  But, with all of the laws on the books in any jurisdiction, curfew or otherwise… If not enforced then the laws on the books are meaningless.

TOO MUCH SHOOTING...TOO MUCH CRIME!

The news in the community has nothing but stories of violence and shootings. What is going on in our city?  The mayor, city officials and councilmembers have all made statements of concern about the number crimes in the city. But, compared to the citizen outcry… the concerns are becoming monumental.

Here are some of the questions neighborhood people are asking: Where do all of these guns come from? How is it that so many young teens and adults between the ages of 15 and 30 get their hands on guns? And, are the laws and punishments in the courts and law enforcement too lenient? We hear a great deal of what’s needed to create more programs for youth to combat the idle time in their lives. But, face it!  Young people who are trying to succeed and finish school or reaching for accomplishments are NOT interested in guns and crime. Today, we see a large element of youngsters engaged in making violence and crime their pathway for survival. Joining a gang is another serious concern that has to be addressed.

America is violent.   On the television, in the pop-songs of the day and the social media might encourage anything from making bombs to how to become a marksman.  We all yell because too much “Big Brother” is interfering in our lives… yet, without any kind of “authoritative” control… what would really happen?  It’s become so out-of-control that I’m concerned at times when leaving my house and traveling through the city. I could become a victim like the innocent bystander at the Caribbean Festival who was killed.  Something needs to be done quickly about the violence, guns, young offenders and influences that create the environment to be criminal.   Let’s start with these priorities: 1)  holding parents of these youngsters responsible  2) improve the D.C. Youth Center  3) make the detention center effective (its a joke)  and  4)  hold city officials accountable to take action...and not just  talk a lot.

ENJOY THE NATURE, BUT SAVE THE RIVERS

The Potomac and Anacostia Rivers are tributaries to the great Chesapeake Bay.   Now that summer is here and we all want to enjoy the “Great Outdoors”… let’s be respectful of the local waterways adjacent to the city and counties of Maryland and Virginia.  Dumping trash, bottles, furniture or anything else harmful in our waterways is senseless and outright wrong.

Fishing, one of my favorites, is not a good idea if you plan to fish and eat your catch from the local watersheds. If everyone would do their part… don’t clutter or harm the water habitats of the Potomac and the Anacostia Rivers, than maybe we will be successful in fully enjoying the benefits of the Chesapeake Bay and her tributaries.

THANKS MR. PRESIDENT

Long overdue!  Bring the troops home from Afghanistan.   Russia got out, France is redrawing its forces… I agree with you, let’s spend the time and money on the home-front in the good old USA.  Thanks to the men and women who have served.  And, my prayers to the souls lost and families who are suffering. War is not my thing… bring the Troops home!

At My Lunch or Dinner Date, it’s Me or the Cell

The invention of the mobile telephone (Cell) is a very convenient service while away from the office or home landline. As a safety device for women late at night, keeping track of you child and connecting while  on-the-go are good reasons why I use my cell phone. But, the electronic device has become a very impolite instrument when used in the company of others.

Last week, I witnessed a man with his female companion at dinner at a very nice Columbia Height’s restaurant. By the time couple arrived and were seated at the table, the man’s cell phone rang with the sound of music. He answered and began to talk, while his date sat idle with an uncomfortable smile on her face.  The man kept talking  about a workplace deal and some tickets to the next Redskins game.  His conversation was loud and intrusive. Why do people “yell” on cell phones? I don’t want to hear their business.

Anyway… finally the man hung up his cell and began to give his attention to his date, after about 10 minutes of phone attention.... The couple ordered their food and before the first bite, his phone rang again and he talked for several more minutes. I felt sorry for the woman because he showed no manners or concern for her. The cell phone is great. But use it sensibly and understand who should be put on hold; the electronics or the human being.

IF YOU PLAY THE GAME OF CRIME....

See where four students were arrested for participating in a “Food Fight” while in the school cafeteria? The students of Centreville High School in Clifton, Virginia started throwing food and yelling when school officials tried to break up the fight. One security officer was attacked by the students and another school official was hurt.  The four students, two 15 year-old boys and two 16 year-old girls were taken into custody and charged with assault.

Good!  Underage or not... If you play the game of crime, expect to do the time. Offensive behavior on the part of young people must be treated accordingly and not to be judged on the fact that they are “Youth”.

PROMISES AND TALK FOR MOUNT PLEASANT

I remember in 1991, 20 years ago, on May 6… when the riots in Mount Pleasant, D.C. took place.  The unrest was caused by several factors that the Latino community was facing at the time.  One was the shooting of a 30-year-old Salvadoran immigrant by an African American police officer.  As a result of the shooting and community outcry, more Latino cops were put on the streets. Secondly, there were many sour attitudes caused by the promises of city officials who never sincerely delivered what Latinos were concerned about in their neighborhoods.  In the early stages of a larger immigrant community developing during the late eighties and early nineties, little concern was given to the Ward One community of new comers.

Still today, while some advancements and achievements have been made, the Latino community of Mount Pleasant has gained little.  The gentrification of whites and non-Latinos has increased throughout the Mount Pleasant community over the past decade causing displacement for many.  While Ward One councilman Jim Graham has been very vocal and supportive of the Mount Pleasant neighborhoods, still how much has been done to improve the community and living conditions?  Crime is high, jobs for Latinos in the city are slow to come by and housing redevelopment efforts have not been affordable for the average family.

Many of the old housing apartment buildings need more inspections and landlord accountability.  Many these buildings could be considered fire traps or below good living standards.  Several years ago, an apartment building at 3145 Mount Pleasant Street was destroyed by fire.  City officials promised to investigate, only to discover that the landlord lived in Florida and many of the housing-safety codes were in violation.  The 30 or so tenant families were displaced.  Now, three years later, the promises have not been met and the displaced tenants will not be able to return. Furthermore, the building on Mount Pleasant Street stands but is not occupied.   Promises and simply talk with no action for Mount Pleasant!

Is the sluggish city support for Mount Pleasant a way of phasing out the Latino community?  The same happened in the city’s Chinatown area where developers have created a mini Times Square…a redevelopment that had little to do with the cultures and life styles of Chinese people.  Mount Pleasant is also a prime area for inner-city livers and development.  Let’s hope that  District officials, Graham and other leaders will support developing a greater community by protecting the rich cultural lifestyles of the Latino community.

TRUANCY, TEENS AND LET’S BE SERIOUS

How can we solve the ever increasing school truancy problem in the city?
D.C. School Officials, D.C. Police and the mayor’s office along with community leaders are planning to address the high truancy rates in the city’s school system.  Planning will include neighborhood meetings with school officials and civic leaders. The efforts of combating truancy in the schools has been discussed and hauled over for the last three decades.

Any given day on the streets of Washington during the hours of school, you will see small gangs or individuals hanging out.  Why is school such a "problem-thing" for these young people?  Is it because the school settings are not as attractive?  Or is it because in our American society, education is not taken seriously?  To solve the problem let’s start holding parents accountable by fining them or jail time… after all they are responsible.  Maybe the military draft is badly needed to address the problems of truancy. There are so many distractions today and young people are so engaged with the externals.  It’s difficult for those who don’t go to school to understand, that today’s world is very competitive and technologically challenging. There is no space on today’s Earth for failure, arrogance or complacency. We need to educate the parents, the community and the deprived youth of today that the world owes you nothing…and nothing will you receive, if you don’t put forth the effort.

THE ANACOSTIA: MORE REPORTS, MORE TRASH, MORE TALK… IT’S POLLUTED!

The non-profit public policy group Appleseed has released a new report about the pollution and the lack of environmental care in the Anacostia River.  So, what’s new? Another report by a policy group to say the same old thing… “It’s polluted”.  How many government and policy reports have we seen over the past 25 years? Over the past several decades, we have seen testing, surveys, environmental explorations and even a five-cent plastic bag campaign to keep trash out of the river.

The Anacostia is one of the most historical sites in the Mid-Atlantic region of America.  In 1608, Captain John Smith traveled the “Eastern Branch” Anacostia River and used it as an inlet into Maryland.  The Civil War played a very big role on the Anacostia.  The river was used by the Union to barricade the Confederates from attacking the Navy Yard.  During World War Two, the Anacostia was essential to US Navy and Coast Guard operations and it served as a safe landing support for the US Air Force Operations at Bolling Air Field.

The problem with the Anacostia River is not just more federal government involvement, but rather a serious enforcement of the laws already on the books. It would help to arrest people who misuse the river by discarding trash, furniture and toxin materials… and heavily fine the sources of run-off.  Signs need to be placed in critical areas along the river banks encouraging the public to stop adding to the pollution with their trash and form carryout materials.  Plus, D.C. Police need to patrol the river more.   Afterall, the Anacostia is only 8.4 miles. Why can’t other law enforcement agencies, such as US Park Police and private agencies help to protect and patrol the river?  Finally, look at other cities around the world where the local river is the center-piece of attraction, commerce and enjoyment. These are just some of ways to solve a very old problem… STOP: The People from Polluting the Anacostia!

Gray's Budget Proposal: The Neediest Get Less, and The Wealthy Pay More Taxes.

No one is happy.  Cuts of more than $180 million in expenditures and raising  nearly $130 million in taxes and fees are designed to close the $312 million budget gap.

-Cuts in social services                                                -Cuts in education
-Parking garage fees that skyrocket                       -Circulator bus fares increase
-A 6% sales tax that will become permanent     -Tax increases for the wealthiest

Perhaps, cutting your administration's salaries and selecting economical automobiles for the official fleet should also be added to the list!  If we're all supposed to feel the pain...why not start from the top?

Census Data Reveals Blacks Are Vanishing from D.C.

Recently released data reveals what many have felt over the past several years...
the African-American population of D.C. is vanishing  --  now  just 51%, a slim margin and the trend is projected to continue downward!  Icon musician of the '70's George Clinton labeled the District "chocolate city" but does the moniker fit any longer?

Middle class Blacks have left willingly or been pushed out, relocating to PG County, Montgomery County and further into the suburbs to find affordable housing.  Meanwhile the Shaw neighborhood, as well as U Street, historically an arts and cultural scene for African-Americans are both now home to tanning salons, spas and new condos popular to young, affluent, white residents!  It's a shock... to see the numbers in black and white, and to understand  the impact on Blacks and Whites!

Does YOUR life in Washington, D.C. match this city?

  • “Happiest city,”
  • “Fastest-growing retail market” and
  • “Most socially networked city in America.”
Washington has recently been raked #1 on each of these three "best" lists.  Mayor Gray indicated in his State of Washington speech, “for those left behind, the picture I have just painted of the city’s successes is not a self-portrait, but something closer to a foreign landscape. You can gaze at it admiringly, but it doesn’t look anything like your neck of the woods.”

Vincent Gray did his best to paint a bright picture of Washington, D.C. despite the new census data that shows the sharp decline of African-Americans, despite many residents continuing economic hardships...and despite his administration's ongoing  dysfunction alongside Council chairman Kwame Brown!

Good luck with that!
